Professional Associations and Communities
The following links will be useful to you in relation to your continuing professional development in mathematics education including practical ideas and resources for promoting talk in mathematics.
Joining a Professional Association for mathematics (ATM or MA) enables you to belong to a community of like-minded peers as well as receiving up to date articles and information about publications and resources. Both the ATM and the MA provide local networking events as well as challenges for pupils.
The NCETM provides on-line communities, blogs and CPD opportunties. From time to time, NCETM also funds small-scale projects for teachers to research aspects of their own classroom practice.
LondonEd also provides professional development insights as schools involved in LSEF funded projects share their school improvement stories across a diverse range of curriculum subjects and across age phases.
Other Useful Projects and Materials
The following three links will connect you with other projects and well-founded materials that provide effective starting points for maths talk.
Thinking Together
The Thinking Together project provides a dialogue-based approach to developing children’s thinking and learning. The website not only provides background to the extensive research but also downloadable resources for teachers.
NRICH
The NRICH project materials aim to enrich the mathematical experiences of all learners. The materials provide challenging starting points to promote rich mathematical activity and talk.
Personal Finance Education Group (Pfeg)
The Personal Finance Education Group (Pfeg) is a financial education charity which supports schools and colleges in teaching about money management. Pfeg offers CPD training and a range of publications, lesson plans and resources (including downloadable and free resources) for schools. Connections to PSHE and mathematics are made explicit. Schools can also engage in Money Week activities each year.
